GUIDING PRINCIPLES ON BUSINESS AND HUMAN RIGHTS

The Guiding Principles on Business and Human Human Rights were developed by John Ruggie, Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Human Rights and Transnational Corporations and Other Business Enterprises. The guidelines were translated from English as a part of the Philanthropy for Human Rights project implemented by GONG, CMS and Documenta in partnership with HR PSOR, and within the Fund for Civil Society Organizations by the EEA and the Kingdom of Norway, implemented in the Republic of Croatia by the National Foundation for Civil Society Development.

The United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights require companies to have a human rights accountability policy, a due diligence process to identify and prevent human rights violations, and processes that permit the system to repair the impact or contribution to human rights violations. This responsibility applies to companies of all sizes, sectors, types of ownerships and structures. Furthermore, these guiding principles encourage companies to work with affected stakeholders and use assessment results for activities, to use qualitative and quantitative indicators to verify their impact on human rights, to publicly report, to include human rights considerations in business strategies, and to link human rights concerns with risks management within their own codes of conduct and other tools.
