Desa & Jerko Baković Fund

to support the education of children in poverty

In February of 2018, the SOLIDARNA Foundation opened the Desa & Jerko Baković Fund thanks to a generous donation from Mrs. Desa Baković who decided to donate 600 000 kn to the SOLIDARNA Foundation to start a program to support the education of children in poverty.

The Fund provides financial, material and professional support to the education of children and young people in poverty, particularly those of elementary school or high school age, who are exposed to material deprivation, at risk of social exclusion and discrimination, and who may not have adequate support in their surroundings to develop confidence and the skills needed for a successful education.

Types of assistance

Due to the findings of the research on child poverty and  intention of complementing other public and private programs for supporting children and young people, the Desa & Jerko Baković Fund will focus on multi-annual, individualized and comprehensive support in the following forms:

Financial and material support for elementary school students

Financial support for school books and equipment costs, ICT equipment, additional tuition and learning aid, extra-curricular activities, school trips

Financial support for high school education of children outside the place of residence

Co-financing of a pupil's home, school books and accessories, ICT equipment, nutrition, pocket money, extra tuition and tuition fees, extracurricular activities, school trips, etc.

Advisory monitoring

Individually advising follow-up of each child included in program by an expert from the child's educational environment with which the child has established a good trust-based relationship.

Workshops, excursions, camps

Additional opportunities for developing self-confidence, creativity and social skills for users of the Fund

In its work, the SOLIDARNA Foundation adheres to all legal regulations, meets the highest standards of transparent reporting to donors and the public, and is guided by its own Rulebook on conflict of interest management and the Rulebook on relations with supporters and donors, according to which 3% of collected donations from citizens and 10% of collected donations companies and corporations can use it for the operational costs of implementing the Fund’s program.

How the Fund was created

Desa Baković (1917-2019) decided, in accordance with the wishes of her and her late husband Jerko (1916-2010), to use part of the proceeds from the sale of her apartment to start a fund to support the education of poor children. Named in honor of its benefactors, the Desa & Jerko Baković Fund was created in 2018 on the basis of a donation of HRK 600,000 from Mrs. Baković. On her 101st birthday, Mrs. Desa donated a safer education for 29 children from families with lower financial status…

The intention of the Fund and the SOLIDARNA Foundation is that this story about the noble act of Mrs. Desa and her late husband inspires our citizens and citizens in philanthropy for children’s rights. Due to this, the Solidarna Foundation invites all citizens to join us as supporters of the Desa and Jerko Baković Fund and to provide financial contribution, professional and material support to increase the Fund with its contributions but also support the growth of every child in security, creativity and acceptance.

Fund Beneficiaries

In the last five school years, the Desa & Jerko Baković Fund has awarded financial support or scholarships to 29 children (young people between the ages of 10 and 18).
From the establishment of the Fund until May 2023, 1,524 monthly scholarships in the total amount of €80,341.31 were distributed to elementary and high school students through the Desa & Jerko Baković Fund.

Scholarship recipients come from 20 different communities: mostly villages and municipalities of Kordun, Banovina and the border areas toward Lika and Gorski Kotar  as well as from Međimurje, Slavonia, Rijeka and Zagreb.

Fund support is provided for children and young people from the following villages, municipalities and cities: Banjsko Selo, Banova Jaruga, Donje Bukovlje, Dvor, Puškarovci – Držimurec – Strelec, Mala Subotica, Generalski stol, Gunja, Roma settlement Kursanec, Čakovec, Krnjak, Novska, Petrinja , Plaški, village Trstenica near Vrginmost, Vojnić, Udbina, Vrginmost, Hrvatska Kostajnica, Sunja, Slavonski Brod, Ogulin (Gavrani), Glina, Rijeka, Zagreb / Belgrade.

Who manages the fund

The Fund is directly managed by the Council of the Fund Desa & Jerko Baković presided over by the university professor in retirement and prominent human rights activist Zoran Pusić, and members are social pedagogue Martina Horvat and human rights activist Vesna Teršelić, social pedagogue Doria Jukić and Zlata Paštar, member of the foundation board. 

For the administrative and organizational affairs and support is responsible the Foundation’s Executive Team.

The final decision on the granting of financial support is made by the SOLIDARNA Trust Fund at the proposal of the Foundation Council of the Fund Desa & Jerko Baković.
