On 29th December 2020, a mere few hours after the devastating earthquake hit Petrinja and the surrounding towns in Sisak-Moslavina County, the SOLIDARNA Foundation reactivated the 5.5 Fund intended for crisis support after the earthquake. Through a big humanitarian action ‘In Solidarity with Petrinja and SMC’ 17.290.270,51 HRK was gathered for aid to victims of the earthquake thanks to donations from 27,614 citizens and 637 corporate donors.
The project Fund 5.5 of the SOLIDARNA Foundation is the national winner of the European Citizen Award through which the European Parliament values the work of civil associations, organisations, and individuals in promoting understanding and strengthening European unity.
The SOLIDARNA Foundation went into the field in Banija immediately and began allocating received donations within the first week after the earthquake. The first means from the Fund 5.5 were spent on the acute needs of the victims: boots, underwear, fuel for heating, and COVID-19 protective gear were distributed throughout the county, thus supplying 12000 afflicted families.
Within the first three months after the earthquake, the largest proportion of the means was spent on crisis provision of housing; purchasing, distributing, and additionally equipping mobile homes and living containers. The SOLIDARNA Foundation responded to urgent housing needs of 84 affected households, with an emphasis on remote and rural communities as well as families who are affected not only by the earthquake but also long-term poverty and additional difficulties like chronic illness, disability and social isolation.
Based on the recommendations of local departments of social services and humanitarians in the field, small financial donations in individual amounts ranging from 2500 to 6000 HRK were distributed by the SOLIDARNA Foundation to additionally support 525 of the most socially at-risk families across the Sisak-Moslavina County. For one-time financial support a total of 1.68 million HRK was taken out of the 5.5 Fund.
The aim and purpose of the presence of the SOLIDARNA Foundation in the earthquake-affected area is to enable people a dignified stay and survival in Banija. This is exactly why 55% of all donations gathered into the Fund 5.5 are directed towards sustainable rebuilding and recovery of the earthquake and poverty-devastated communities. In cooperation with partners from a range of humanitarian organisations the SOLIDARNA foundation has started projects of building wooden houses, earthquake-resistant prefabricated houses and purchasing undamaged ‘green houses’ as well as the rebuilding of barns, pigsties and chicken coops, while citizens are supported in rebuilding on their own through donations of materials and contracting services. Through these methods long-term renewal and survival was made possible for 133 families in Banija.
For a sustainable recovery of the Sisak-Moslavina County, a million kuna was invested into 10 local development initiatives, OPGs (eng family farms), and other legal subjects whose work and ideas offer a vision of a better future, development, and strengthening of the local community. Through the Fund 5.5 the SOLIDARNA Foundation aspires to turn the crisis that struck this community into an opportunity for sustainable green development.
Through its work and presence in the earthquake-affected Banija the SOLIDARNA Foundation confirmed that cooperation is an anchor in crisis situations. We thank the members of the Council of the Fund 5.5 for being with us from the start and without whom we could not have achieved what we did: prof. dr. sc. Marina Ajduković, architect and art historian doc. dr. sc. Zrinka Paladino, chairwoman of the board of the SOLIDARNA Foundation Sanja Sarnavka, members of the initiative Zagreb Earthquake Relief Jania Zane i Sara Juričić i architect Ana Dana Beroš.
Every single change, even the smallest one, and any improvement in the lives of those affected was achieved thanks to humanitarians, volunteers, associations, foundations and all donors-big and small-who gave their time, money and knowledge to help the people who were affected by the earthquake in Banija through the Fund 5.5. we extend special thanks to the Zamah Foundation, ADRA Croatia, Ljudi za ljude, Dobro dobrim, Civil Rights Project Sisak, Serb National Council, volunteer platform SLOGA, the association ROM.HR and the entire Coordination of Humanitarians under the Croatian Red Cross on their cooperation in solidarity.
Fund 5.5 closed for donations on 31/12/2021, but we have continued our work in Banija with the priority objective of finishing the building of houses and community recovery as well as permanently developing projects that will push society forward.
